Beuree Bosch Pear

 

The pear is any of several tree and shrub species of genus Pyrus /ˈpaɪrəs/, in the family Rosaceae. Several species of pear are valued for their edible fruit, while others are cultivated as ornamental trees. The term "pyriform" is used to describe something pear-shaped.

 

The Poached Pear

 

INGREDIENTS

1 vanilla bean, halved lengthways
2 cinnamon sticks
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
4 peeled pears 
ice-cream 

 

METHOD
1 Place 4-5 cups cold water, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar in a saucepan over medium to high heat. Bring to the boil and reduce heat to low.

 

2 Add pears. Cook, partially covered, and turn occasionally, for 15 - 18 minutes or until pears are just ready to eat. Remove from heat and allow pears to cool in the syrup, transfer pears to a plate, leaving the syrup.

 

3 Cook the left over syrup to medium to high. Bring to the boil. Boil for 10 minutes or until liquid is reduced by one-third. Serve pears with sugar syrup and ice-cream.
